Live your dreams or play the game?
As of late, I’ve decided to go back to school. Over the last 12 years, since I moved out of my mom’s house in the Bay Area to discover a new life in Los Angeles, I’ve learned a lot. Not going to lie—looking back, I’m a pretty resilient dude. I’ve lived off minimum wage, invested, gambled, experimented, and been exploited by some employers along the way (not surprising). In addition, I’ve learned many valuable skills: I’ve leveled up my graphic design abilities, worked in sales, learned how to DJ, and managed people thanks to strong people skills.
One thing I’ve realized along the way is that I’m a well-rounded artist with a passion for bringing ideas to life and a drive to outwork any competition. For this next chapter of my life, I want to build a professional background that allows me to create long-term, compounding value for myself. I’ve come to see that the world of sales can be a tedious game with little long-term gain—mostly just the potential for quick returns. Because of that, the trades seem like a solid option.
I’ll still be making art and creating new design projects, but in today’s world I need a job that fairly compensates me for my time and input. That way, on the weekends, I’ll have the opportunity to create lasting and meaningful projects.
I plan to specialize in electricity and become a great electrician, and I know this will change my life for the better.
In retrospect, I didn’t have to do this alone in LA—but by doing so, I met my wife, a fellow artist, and built strong people skills. Yeah, I’ve done a complete 360 in the past month, but my head is finally pointed in the right direction.
